The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Despite legitimate criticisms, Biya has delivered four decades of crucial political stability that foreign investors and security partners depend on in a volatile region. The election proceeded calmly with millions participating peacefully, showing that democratic processes remain functional. Any transition now risks dangerous instability that could expand existing insurgencies and create ethnic coalitions threatening regional security across central Africa.

Government-critical narrative

Cameroon's election represents a desperate power grab by an aging dictator whose 43-year reign has brought nothing but poverty and violence. Biya's regime systematically crushes opposition voices, arrests candidates who dare challenge him, and uses state police to terrorize citizens into silence. The country has become a failed state with terrorism ranking in the global top ten, a million displaced people, and 40% living in poverty despite abundant natural resources.

Metaculus Prediction

There is a 61.5% chance that Paul Biya will win the next Cameroon election with 80% or more of the votes cast, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
