The Spin

The EU’s burdensome regulations have forced Meta’s hand. The TTPA’s unworkable requirements create compliance burdens and uncertainty that make political advertising in the EU all but impossible. Meta’s decision, however, will not prevent EU users, candidates, politicians, or political parties from debating politics or producing and sharing political content organically.

The TTPA is crucial for safeguarding European democracy. By requiring platforms to provide greater context, more labels, and comply with additional restrictions for political advertising, the TTPA will ensure that EU citizens can make informed political choices ahead of national or EU-wide elections and referendums, while protecting their data and rights.

Metaculus Prediction

There is a 20% chance that Meta will report 1 billion active users by December 31, 2031, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
