The Spin

This call was a diplomatic risk for Macron as it was a step towards undoing the isolation of Moscow that Western leaders have pursued since the Ukraine invasion. Putin, due to his country's ties with Israel and Iran, has repeatedly offered to mediate, trying to use their conflict as a means of breaking that isolation.

This is the first time that Putin and Macron had talked since 2022 because following their last call, sensitive details from their discussions were leaked to the media, betraying the trust of the Russian leader.

There is a 2% chance that Emmanuel Macron will cease being President of France before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
