Set to go into effect this week, the law requires social media firms to disclose how they moderate content deemed harmful in their terms of service, copies of which are required to be shared with the New York State Attorney General alongside regular reports of how they have enforced the policies.

In its filing contesting the law at the Manhattan federal court, X said: "The state is impermissibly trying to generate public controversy about content moderation in a way that will pressure social media companies, such as X Corp., to restrict, limit, disfavor or censor certain constitutionally protected content on X that the state dislikes."

The suit also criticizes the law for failing to take account of a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit last year that sided with X over the state of California after it sought to pass a similar law, holding that if enacted, it would likely violate the First Amendment.
