The Facts

  • On Monday, the British foreign ministry stated it would seek support from the UN Security Council on its call for a Sudan ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid. The UK and Sierra Leone are sponsoring a draft resolution to safeguard civilians in the conflict, and British foreign minister David Lammy will preside over the vote.Russia used its veto power on Monday to block a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for warring sides in Sudan to cease hostilities with immediate effect and engage in dialogue towards a national cease-fire.

  • Conflict broke out in April 2023 after a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ahead of civilian transition. The civil war has killed tens of thousands, triggering the world's worst displacement crisis. The country was the only one in the 15-member UNSC to either vote against the measure or abstain, with its representative stressing that Russia would "continue to use its veto" to ensure the sovereignty of African nations.

The Spin

OnThe Monday, the international community had an opportunity to put an end to the slaughter, rape, and famine in Sudan's terrible civil war. However, one country prevented the Council from speaking with one voice. Russia has once again obstructed peace by using its veto power, which allows Africans to continueallow the bloodshed in Sudan to continue. Putin is solely to blame.
