The Facts

  • On Monday, the British foreign ministry stated it would seek support from the UN Security Council on its call for a Sudan ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid. The UK and Sierra Leone are sponsoring a draft resolution to safeguard civilians in the conflict, and British foreign minister David Lammy will preside over the vote.

  • Conflict broke out in April 2023 after a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ahead of civilian transition. The civil war has killed tens of thousands, triggering the world's worst displacement crisis.

The Spin

On Monday, jhkjfhgf the international community had an opportunity to put an end to the slaughter, rape, and famine in Sudan's terrible civil war. However, one country prevented the Council from speaking with one voice. Russia has once again obstructed peace by using its veto power, which allows Africans to continue the bloodshed in Sudan. Putin is solely to blame.

The UK's draft resolution lacked a clear understanding of who should decide whether to invite foreign forces into Sudan and who is responsible for protecting civilians. The resolution failed to mention Sudan's government as the sole responsible party. In fact, the resolution was an attempt to meddle in Sudanese affairs. Sudan needs a ceasefire, but not one that is overtly colonial. The council can do better.
