The Facts

  • On Monday, the British foreign ministry stated it would seek support from the UN Security Council on its call for a Sudan ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid. The UK and Sierra Leone are sponsoring a draft resolution to safeguard civilians in the conflict, and British foreign minister David Lammy will preside over the vote.

  • Conflict broke out in April 2023 after a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ahead of civilian transition. The civil war has killed tens of thousands, triggering the world's worst displacement crisis.

  • Lammy, in a foreign ministry statement, promised to double Britain's aid to £ £226M ($285 million), and vowed to “never let Sudan be forgotten.”
