The Facts

  • Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on Tuesday after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress.

  • Bannon was convicted in 2022 for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the US Capitol. He continues to appeal his conviction.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Coming back as a wild card in the final leg of the presidential race, Bannon's return is another asset to the Trump campaign. As a key architect of the Make American Great Again movement, Bannon will energize the base and get people to the polls.

Democratic narrative

Bannon's release won't significantly impact the election outcome. His podcast has lost momentum during his absence, falling out of the top charts. With only a week left, there's not enough time to mobilize his audience and create the widely anticipated post-election chaos.
