During Tuesday's vice-presidential debate between Republican Sen. J.D. Vance and Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, former Pres. Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, in an all-caps social media post said he would veto a national abortion ban.

He further wrote that abortion laws would be "up to the states to decide based on the will of their voters," adding that he "fully" supports exceptions for "rape, incest, and the life of the mother."

Trump also emphasized his opposition to abortions in the "7th, 8th, or 9th month" of pregnancy, repeating the controversial claim that Democrats support the "execution of the baby after birth," referring to those born alive after a failed abortion.

Previously, Vance in August claimed Trump would support such a ban. However, during his September debate with VP Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, Trump said he "didn't discuss it with J.D."

Also during the September debate, Harris argued Trump would "sign a national abortion ban" if reelected, a claim Trump called a "lie."

During the VP debate, Vance said he and Trump are "pro-family" and Republicans need to regain American's "trust" on the topic.

During the VP, Vance said he and Trump are "pro-family" and Republicans need to regain American's "trust" on the topic.

Trump had to once again reiterate his position that abortion laws, as is now the law of the land, should be up to each state to vote on separately. It makes sense, however, that Democrats are continuing to lie about Trump given their candidates' voting records on the issue. As Minnesota governor, Walz signed a bill that stopped requiring doctors to save a baby who's been born alive during a botched abortion; and Harris voted for the same when she was a Senator.

It's no surprise that Democrats continue lying about Trump's position on abortion considering their candidates' shaky record on this issue. Trump's position has always been that abortion restrictions should be decided by the states, and now he's repeated that again for all to see. Women currently have access to necessary medical treatments in all 50 states and that's not going to change if Trump returns to the White House.

Trump shouldn't be allowed to get away with flip-flopping on abortion. He proudly appointed three Supreme Court justices to help overturn Roe v. Wade. His campaign has been tied to the radically anti-abortion agenda, Project 2025. And his party is publicly vocal about its opposition to reproductive rights, including Vance's stated wish that abortion be made illegal nationwide.

There's a 12% chance of a US national abortion ban before Jan. 1 2030 if Trump is elected president compared to a 1% chance if he loses, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
