OpenAI, the creator of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly planning to shift from its current nonprofit status to becoming a for-profit company, with CEO Sam Altman receiving equity in the corporation.

While it will no longer control OpenAI's main business operations, the nonprofit, which was founded in 2015 as an AI research organization, will still have a minority stake in the company.

Once given for-profit status, the current cap on returns for OpenAI investors will be abolished, with some estimating the corporation will be worth upwards of $150B after the restructuring.
