According to documents obtained by The New York Times, billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch is engaged in a legal battle with three of his children over the future of his empire after his death.

With an estimated value of $19.5B, Murdoch’s media empire is controlled by a trust shared by Rupert’s four eldest children – Lachlan, James, Elisabeth, and Prudence. However, Rupert wants to grant its exclusive control to Lachlan, reportedly to preserve a right-leaning editorial stance.

The three siblings are reportedly challenging their father’s move. Last month, a Nevada probate commissioner ruled that Rupert could amend the trust if he did so in good faith and for the sole benefit of his heirs. The hearing is expected in September.

Lachlan, arguably the most conservative Murdoch heir, took over the reins of Fox and News Corp last year when Rupert stepped down. James stepped down as Fox’s chief executive officer in 2019 and resigned from the News Corp board the following year.

However, the three siblings are challenging their father’s move, arguing that he cannot rewrite the trust to give more power to their conservative brother. Last month, a Nevada probate commissioner ruled that Murdoch could amend the trust if he did so in good faith and for the sole benefit of his heirs.

A trial in a Nevada probate is expected to begin in September with Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch on one side and the three estranged siblings on the other.
