The Facts

  • A US national security official said Tuesday that the government was aware in recent weeks of an increased threat from Iran against the former Pres. Donald Trump. Officials added that the threat, of which Pres. Biden was aware, was not linked to the Jul. 13 assassination attempt.

  • Iran denied the accusation, stating that it doesn't want Trump killed but rather "punished in a court of law for ordering the assassination of General Soleimani," who was killed by a US drone strike in January 2020.

  • Due to the previously known intelligence on the alleged threat, the Secret Service (USSS) enhanced security ahead of Trump's outdoor rally in Butler, Pa., where he was shot in the ear by 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks.
