When Will the UK General Election Take Place?

The UK's Labour Party launched their manifesto in Manchester on Thursday. Speaking at the event, leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer claimed that while there was no "magic wand," he had moved his party "away from the dead end of gesture politics" and created a "credible long-term plan."

The manifesto contains the party's six "first steps for change," pledging "tough spending rules" for economic stability, a reduction in NHS waiting times with 40K more weekly appointments, a new Border Security Command, the creation of Great British Energy, more neighborhood police, and 6.5K more school teachers.

Describing the manifesto as one focused on "wealth creation," the text also includes "five missions" to secure the highest sustained growth in the G7, to deliver "cheaper, zero-carbon" electricity by 2030, to halve serious violent crime, to reform the childcare and education systems, and to create an NHS "where everyone lives well for longer."

Policies within these five missions include the establishment of a National Wealth Fund; commitments to double onshore wind, triple solar power, and quadruple offshore wind by 2030; a new Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee; the end of VAT exemptions for private schools; and a doubling of cancer scanners.

According to Labour's costings, public service policies will cost £4.8B and will raise £7.4B, while the party's Green Propserity Plan will cost £4.7B, and will be funded by £3.5B in borrowing and £1.2B in windfall taxes on oil and gas. companies.
