French government could cut off social media during unrest, says Macron

Staff at France’s major public broadcasting groups are striking for two days to protest controversial government plans to merge their services into a media giant.

Public broadcasting unions called for protests on Thursday and Friday against a reform of public broadcasting that was voted on by the Senate in June 2023, but extensively amended in the National Assembly committee in mid-May.

On Thursday, the French parliament started reviewing a bill introduced by Culture Minister Rachida Dati, which provides for the creation of a large public media institution called "France Médias."

Media workers gathered near the Culture Ministry in Paris, claiming their survival was at stake and called for sending "a radical message." The unions are reportedly preparing for another possible strike on May 28.

Dati defended what she described as an "ambitious" and "long-awaited" reform, arguing it would protect the public media sector from tough competition from private companies. The reform would reportedly affect some 16K employees.

The merger would include France Télévisions, Radio France and the National Audiovisual Institute (INA), with no decision yet on whether France Médias Monde (RFI, France 24, Monte Carlo Doualiya) will be added to the plan.
