State media in Iran has confirmed that Pres. Ebrahim Raisi died on Sunday at the age of 63 in a helicopter crash in the country's remote northwestern province of East Azerbaijan.

All passengers aboard the aircraft were killed, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the provincial governor and the representative of the Iranian supreme leader in East Azerbaijan.

According to rescue teams deployed to the mountainous and forested area where the crash took place, the entire cabin of the helicopter was significantly damaged. Iranian authorities added that some bodies were burned beyond recognition.

This comes as the president and his entourage attended the inauguration of a dam at the border with Azerbaijan, with two other helicopters in the convoy landing safely in the foggy weather.

Raisi, who had been in the presidential office for three years, was seen as potential successor to the 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ultimately runs the Islamic Republic.
