On Monday, The board of trustees at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill voted unanimously to divert all $2.3M allocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs towards campus safety initiatives.
UNC-Chapel Hill is taking a big step in ridding higher education of the noxious DEI ideology. Any worldview that reduces people down to their race, gender, or sexual orientation is anathema to the ideals of individualism that have built this country. The recent anti-Israel protests on campus have also done much to expose this flawed oppressed-oppressor dualism as hateful and tribal.
The Republican assault of on diversity programs will hurt all of us in the long run. By conjuring up an imagined "woke" menace, the GOP has found an excuse to gut the funding of higher education and limit academic freedom by restricting what schools can and cannot say. What's worse, the underrepresented communities that need DEI the most to get a fighting chance at success will have another opportunity lost to them.
