On Monday, The board of trustees at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill voted unanimously to divert all $2.3M allocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs toward campus safety initiatives.
Some trustees cited the recent pro-Palestinian protests as the motivation for the decision. Two weeks ago, the dispersal of a protest encampment led to 36 being detained, with 27 receiving a citation for trespassing and six being arrested.
UNC-Chapel Hill is taking a big step in ridding higher education of the divisive DEI ideology. Any worldview that reduces people down to their race, gender, or sexual orientation is anathema to the ideals of individualism that have built this country. The recent anti-Israel protests on campus have also done much to expose this flawed "oppressed-oppressor" dualism as hateful and tribal.
The Republican assault on diversity programs will hurt all of us in the long run. By conjuring up an imagined "woke" menace, the GOP has found an excuse to gut the funding of higher education and limit academic freedom while concerningly boosting militarized police capabilities on its campus. What's worse, the underrepresented communities that need DEI the most have lost this resource.
