Israel should go ahead with a ground invasion of Rafah brushing aside the US's pleas for restraint. There is no alternative to sending troops into the city as the goal is to eliminate Hamas's battalions there. In any case, Israel is engaged in a "dual campaign” -- one military and one diplomatic. The latter gives it time and resources to wage the former, but if diplomacy stops paying, Israel must go it all alone if needed.
The Israeli ground attack on Rafah targets Yahya Sinwar, supposedly linked to the Hamas attack. However, the extensive destruction and casualties in Gaza indicate broader retaliation by Israel. Over 28,000 Palestinians killed, 80% of buildings destroyed in the north. Civilians have fled to Rafah. The UN has warned of an impending slaughter. The US must, therefore, halt support to Israel to end Gaza's suffering.
