When ICE locks up an 85-year-old widow of an American veteran, that's not enforcement, it's a dragnet. Data shows only 6% of new detainees have violent crime convictions, yet taxpayers shell out $152 a day per person to jail people who pose zero public safety threat. Diverting government law enforcement agencies to chase down noncriminals has made the country measurably less safe and the government should be embarrassed by this episode.

Right narrative

While this incident might be unfortunate, it's important to remember that being in the country illegally is a violation of federal law, and ICE doesn't need a violent crime on someone's record to enforce it. Sanctuary policies and lax enforcement have real costs: billions drained from schools and infrastructure, and tragedies. Enforcing immigration law protects the general welfare of all Americans, not just the worst-case scenarios.
