Cruise ship outbreaks keep happening, and the absence of real medical countermeasures means the next one could be far worse.

This case demonstrates the effectiveness of a coordinated international response, which successfully contained the virus, with all 317 high-risk contacts completing quarantine without additional transmission detected. Building on these efforts, the WHO is now conducting studies in 21 countries to better understand the disease and support the development of diagnostics, treatments and vaccines to help prevent future outbreaks.
