The Spin

Democratic narrative

Sean Duffy spent seven months filming a lavish reality show while gas prices hit $4.52 a gallon, all backed by Boeing, Toyota and United Airlines — companies his own department regulates. Promoting road trips as budget-friendly while accepting perks from regulated industries isn't patriotism; it's a serious conflict of interest.

Republican narrative

The outrage over Duffy's Great American Road Trip is pure partisan theater. Career ethics officials at the Department of Transportation reviewed and approved the trip, and production costs were covered by a nonprofit, not taxpayers. Duffy is a career public servant who's always done what's best for America, which is why he wanted to provide a patriotic celebration of the country's beauty.
