Vance Refers Walz, Ellison to DOJ for Fraud Probe

Is this a justified response to leadership failure or a political attack on Democratic rivals?

The Spin

Republican narrative

Minnesota's social services fraud scandal is a massive failure of leadership, as senior officials in Walz's and Ellison's offices knew about systemic fraud as early as 2019 and did nothing. Instead of stopping fraudsters, the administration retaliated against whistleblowers to keep the scandal quiet. An estimated $300 million in child nutrition funds and potentially $9 billion in Medicaid dollars were lost or put at serious risk. Walz and Ellison must face justice.

Democratic narrative

Vance's DOJ referral is a transparent political stunt targeting Walz and Ellison, the same two Democrats who have filed dozens of lawsuits against the Trump administration. The fraud prosecutions were already underway, and Minnesota has enacted new oversight laws to address gaps. Using federal machinery to go after political rivals while letting Trump-aligned fraudsters walk free is the real corruption story here.
