US Waives Rights Conditions on $320M Egypt Military Aid

Is military aid to Egypt a bargain that anchors a key partner or a blank check that rewards repression?

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Keeping Cairo close is worth far more than a symbolic certification form. Egypt sits on the Suez Canal, borders Gaza and opens channels to Tehran that few others can — withholding weapons money over paperwork only hands that leverage to Moscow and Beijing. Trump is right to treat the relationship as a strategic asset, as aid flows back to American defense plants while anchoring a key regional partner.

Anti-Trump narrative

Human rights conditions covering only a fraction of U.S. military aid to Egypt were always little more than cosmetic. Journalists get hauled off, torture and disappearances documented, yet Trump follows past administrations in releasing hundreds of millions while Cairo is rewarded for peace with Israel. Waiving even these conditions over a vague "helpful regional role" torches American credibility while demanding virtually nothing in return.
