Brazilians are paying for Lula's vanity. Trump gave him a year, yet Lula chose provocation instead of a deal. He negotiated in bad faith and did not even send representatives to Washington to fight for Brazil. His economic policies hurt Americans and Brazilians alike. These tariffs are his signature. Brazil deserves a better leader, someone who shows up and delivers.
Trump just handed Lula reelection. This new tariff aimed at punishing Brazil actually gives him and his party a nationalist rallying cry, exactly as it did before, while Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign now carries his father's foreign entanglements as baggage. For most Brazilians, this is pure foreign interference — and blaming Lula's ego doesn't convince swing voters.
What Washington calls trade policy is actually an empire defending its chokepoints at the expense of a foreign country's sovereignty, with the active support of a local elite auctioning off Brazil's autonomy for a shot at power. Tariffs have been imposed not because Brazil's trade practices are unfair, but because its independence threatens card-network profits and online platforms' impunity.
