UK-France 'One In, One Out' Migrant Deal Collapses

Was this deal cruelty that treats refugees as bargaining chips or a costly gimmick that failed at border control?

The Spin

Left narrative

The one in, one out deal treated desperate refugees as bargaining chips, shipping traumatized people back into the hands of the smugglers who brutalized them. Forcing torture survivors into freezing camps with no shelter, no health care and no safety is nothing short of cruelty and only reaffirms the calls for safe, humanitarian routes to the U.K.

Right narrative

A deal that returned a few hundred people while tens of thousands kept landing was always a gimmick which fleeced the taxpayer in exchange for nothing. Lawyers quickly found loopholes, while a reliance on French cooperation to solve Britain's border troubles showed stunning naïvety. Real control means detaining and deporting anyone who arrives illegally, without endless appeals.
