Releasing rapists and killers after just half their sentences is a reckless betrayal of victims who trusted the justice system. Up to 7,000 serious offenders — including sex criminals and violent felons — will hit the streets starting in September, years before expected. GPS tags and probation officers are no substitute for keeping dangerous people behind bars.
Prison overcrowding is a genuine crisis demanding bold reform, and Scotland's sentencing overhaul shows the same hard reality facing governments across Britain. Without structural changes, courts will lose the ability to jail newly convicted offenders at all, making the public far less safe. Expanding capacity, tagging releases and investing in probation is the responsible path forward.
