The Spin

Government-critical narrative

Excluding rapists and child sex offenders while leaving killers of police officers eligible for early release sends a damning message about whose lives matter. But releasing criminals like the killers of Harper early is a betrayal of every officer who puts their life on the line. If these men were convicted today, they'd face life sentences under the law created in Harper's name — yet the government is still letting them walk.

Pro-government narrative

Excluding rapists and serious child sex offenders from early release is the right, necessary line to draw. Facing an overstretched prison system inherited from years of neglect, this decision proves victims' safety and dignity can be protected without collapsing justice itself. It is not perfect, but within real constraints, the boldest, most compassionate choice available.
