The Spin

Pro-government narrative

This government is protecting national security by increasing defense spending, putting the country on strong footing in a new era of hybrid warfare. Learning the lessons of Ukraine, this plan is a transformative moment for the British military as it adapts to a dangerous new world.

Left narrative

The MoD has a long track record of wasteful spending as part of a much wider military-industrial complex, while the media's go-to military "experts" are often retired officers with undisclosed defense industry paychecks seeking to manufacture consent for endless war spending. Welfare, housing and public services during a cost-of-living crisis deserve funding first.

Right narrative

This plan is only about half what the military has said is needed to meet current spending commitments and deter security threats, with only £1 billion in genuinely new money buried inside creative Treasury accounting since Healey's resignation. Defense chiefs have warned that training and missions will be cut while NATO allies watch in disbelief. Underfunding the military now means every other national priority sits on a dangerously unstable foundation.
