This looks more like a political stunt than a serious enforcement shift — dozens of Russian shadow fleet vessels have transited U.K. waters since March with zero action, and three other sanctioned tankers sailed through the Channel that same day without incident. Convenient timing after a string of political embarrassments for Starmer deserves serious scrutiny.

These sanctions have no basis in international law — they are unilateral measures that most of the world has refused to endorse. Using military force to board civilian commercial vessels on that basis sets a precedent that any powerful state can interdict ships it dislikes, undermining the freedom of navigation the West claims to champion.
