The Spin

Labour Party narrative

Digital ID policies will enable the government to finally catch up with modern life, by offering a free, optional and secure way to access services faster. The system puts citizens in control of their data while enabling the kind of efficiency people already expect from banking and shopping apps. Building a deliberately inefficient state to protect liberty means wasting billions on administrative staff and outdated systems that can't prevent fraud or deliver services effectively.

Conservative Party narrative

The digital ID scheme has already collapsed from compulsory to voluntary, exposing government chaos and proving it won't achieve its stated goals on immigration and fraud. Police plans to repurpose ID photos as mugshots for facial recognition databases reveal the true agenda behind this Blair-era surveillance dream. Voluntary today means mandatory tomorrow, and handing over biometrics opens the door to Chinese-style social credit control.
