Trump Says He'll Attend White House Correspondents' Dinner

Is Trump's dinner attendance a media acknowledgement of his prowess or journalists betraying their principles to appease an authoritarian leader?

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump has forced the far-left media establishment to finally surrender after years of fake news attacks. The association ditched its usual partisan comedian for a real entertainer, essentially admitting it's important for the president to attend the dinner and its past guests were chosen in poor taste. This is a long-overdue moderation from the press corps and a chance to make this dinner legitimately entertaining.

Anti-Trump narrative

This dinner is supposed to celebrate the First Amendment and allowing Trump to attend is an unconscionable surrender by journalists. Trump has barred reporters from the White House, replaced credible Pentagon correspondents with propagandists, and directed the Department of Justice to target journalists. Linking arms with an authoritarian who treats the press as enemies of the people betrays every principle journalism claims to uphold.
