Trump Hits Solar Imports With 15% Polysilicon Tariff

Is this a vital fix for U.S. security and supply chains or a costly barrier that harms businesses and consumers?

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

America's polysilicon supply chain has been gutted by foreign dumping for decades, with the U.S. share of global production collapsing from 50% in 2005 to less than 2% in 2024. Given its vital importance to critical sectors — including semiconductors and solar — tariffs are desperately needed to redress this imbalance by fixing the structural incentives to reshore polysilicon production and reduce foreign dependence.

Anti-Trump narrative

Tariffs and price floors cannot manufacture the scale effects or industrial experience that make Chinese polysilicon production so competitive. Rather, these counterproductive measures will undermine U.S. industry, which will face low yields and high costs, to no benefit. The sooner the administration finally learns that erecting trade barriers in the name of national security is a fool's errand, the better.
