Should Republicans fire MacDonough to pass the SAVE Act or is the real problem a lack of votes?

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

The SAVE America Act is wildly popular — even 71% of Democrats support photo ID at the polls — yet the Senate parliamentarian keeps blocking it from passing with a simple majority. Senate Republicans need to stop playing soft and start fighting for election integrity the way Democrats fight to undermine it. Majority Leader Thune has every right to fire Elizabeth MacDonough and it's the only move that gets this done.

Anti-Trump narrative

Firing the Senate parliamentarian would backfire badly, as Thune himself warned it would cost Republican votes, not gain them. MacDonough is a neutral referee whose rulings have gone both ways, and torching that institution just because of one unfavorable call is reckless governance. The real obstacle to the SAVE Act is a vote-count problem, not a personnel problem.
