Scotland Elects Non-Binary Visa Holder to Parliament

Is this a historic breakthrough for representation or a sign of a broken democratic system?

The Spin

Left narrative

Scotland just made history by electing its first two transgender MSPs, both Scottish Greens. This is exactly what progression in representation looks like — a Tamil immigrant standing in parliament proves that barriers exist to be broken. The Scottish Green Party was the only party to pledge real protections for trans people, and that commitment just earned seats in Holyrood.

Right narrative

Electing a non-citizen on a student visa to a national parliament is a democratic failure. A small group of party insiders put Manivannan on a list, and voters never directly chose this outcome. A student visa also bars more than 20 hours of work per week, raising real legal questions about whether serving as an MSP is even lawful. British elections should require British citizenship, and this situation exposes a badly broken system.
