The Spin

Democratic narrative

It's great to see South Carolina Republicans do the right thing. Changing maps mid-election is reckless, and even GOP senators admitted their consciences wouldn't allow them to stop a vote already underway. Protecting fair representation isn't a partisan issue, it's basic democratic integrity.

Republican narrative

State Senate Republicans caved to Democrats and betrayed conservative voters by killing a redistricting map that reflected the state's overwhelmingly right-leaning values. Blue states gerrymander freely while Republicans get pressured into protecting the status quo, a double standard that has to end.

Cynical narrative

Both Democrats and Republicans gerrymander massively, making American democracy far from fair. Until election laws change and independent redistricting commissions replace politician-drawn maps, neither party has any real incentive to stop.
