In light of Monday's incident, the army has taken decisive action, quickly suspending all small-arms training nationwide until further notice. Moving forward, the military will protect civilians by constructing additional indoor ranges and vertical backstops. Establishment-critical narrative

A temporary suspension isn't enough — South Korea has a real pattern of military training injuring civilians, from a golf caddy needing emergency surgery in 2020 to nearly 30 people wounded in a 2024 bombing. Ranges built decades ago, like the Daegu facility, are now surrounded by schools and playgrounds they were never designed to border. Mandatory buffer zones and serious infrastructure overhauls are, therefore, long overdue.
