License plate readers were sold to communities as crime-fighting tools, but school districts are using them to run sweeping surveillance on families just to verify which side of a district line they live on. Buford City Schools ran hundreds of these searches, exposing where families worship, seek medical care and travel on vacation — none of which is any school's business. Tracking innocent people's daily movements without a warrant isn't protecting anyone; it's mass surveillance dressed up as administration.

School fraud is rampant, with over $225 million confirmed stolen through fake enrollments, falsified records and phony student identities — and that's just what investigators have caught so far. When districts can't even verify who's legitimately enrolled, they're handing fraudsters a blueprint to drain public funds for years undetected. This is simply the use of new tools for residency verification, a normal school protocol to protect taxpayer money and ensure resources reach the kids who actually belong in the district.
