Is this an indefensible subsidy for carnage or the only way to reach enemies hiding beneath civilians?

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Shipping 40,000 two-ton bombs is beyond anything a country fighting guerrillas and bombing refugee camps could ever justify. These weapons flatten city blocks and vaporize everything within hundreds of feet, which is exactly why a previous freeze existed and why lifting it was a disgrace. What's worse, American taxpayers are footing the $2.8 billion bill for what could become greater carnage than seen during World War II.

Pro-establishment narrative

Demonizing one bomb by weight instead of examining how it's actually used gets more civilians killed, not fewer. Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran bury command centers and missile silos under dense neighborhoods precisely because they expect the West to flinch, and only heavy penetrators reach those targets. The Senate was right to reject arms bans that would embolden them, allowing Israel to defend against enemies who don't play by the same rules.
