Texas Rep Gonzales Halts Reelection Bid, Will Finish Term

Are Republicans protecting Gonzales for their majority or waiting for investigations to conclude before rushing to judgment?

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Gonzales has made the appropriate decision here. Staying in Congress while allowing the investigations to play out preserves intellectual consistency and the fundamental principles of justice. Resigning now would be unwise, as the current situation in the House is too tight for him to lose Republicans a seat. But ending his reelection campaign makes sense.

Establishment-critical narrative

Gonzales has now admitted his affair with an aide — an unambiguous ethics violation. Yet Republicans have admitted they're shielding him to protect their razor-thin House majority. Speaker Mike Johnson can only hide behind due process for so long. Gonzales should've resigned in addition to ending his reelection campaign.
