Forcing flu shots on every service member regardless of their circumstances was never a rational policy. Hegseth's move, therefore, was a welcome step in the right direction, removing a mandate that eroded trust between troops and the institutions they risk their lives to defend, while respecting their fundamental medical autonomy and personal convictions. In the long run, this policy strengthens the military.
Dropping the flu mandate at Lackland sent vaccination rates from nearly 100% to 40%, and at least 275 to medical. Despite what some may claim, the flu vaccine requirement dates back to 1945 for a reason, as respiratory viruses can devastate troops living in close quarters. Choosing to ignore these irrefutable facts does not change the epidemiology, but it will produce outbreaks, as it already has.
