Nobody should lose five hours in a cell and face a decade in prison so officials can dodge blame for a rushed, no-bid paint job that fell apart on its own. Rushing a felony indictment while exculpatory records sat in a government file, then wrecking the evidence, is an abuse that only independent watchdogs can untangle. Accountability can't stop at dropping the charge.
Prosecutors acted on what Interior and the Park Police handed them, which pointed squarely to vandalism, and when fuller records surfaced, they dropped the charge. That is the system self-correcting, not a conspiracy demanding another round of investigations. Damage to a national monument that dates to 1922 deserves a serious response, and blaming the lawyers who took the evidence at face value gets it backward.
