The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Two passports means dual loyalties, and the top offices that speak for Mexico can't afford that split. Sovereignty was hard-won after a century of invasions and lost territory, so keeping foreign allegiance out of these positions is basic self-defense. Letting officials hide behind a second citizenship when accountability comes calling is exactly how impunity thrives.

Government-critical narrative

Locking millions of Mexicans born abroad out of the presidency punishes families and individuals for an accident of birth. Furthermore, tying eligibility to a renunciation paper issued by a foreign government on a foreign timetable hands outsiders a veto over Mexican ballots. Aimed at political rivals, this rushed and senseless measure could end up snaring the ruling party's own candidates.
