The Spin

Republican narrative

Medicaid work requirements are a proven path to lifting millions out of poverty and requiring able-bodied adults to work 80 hours monthly will restore Medicaid to its core purpose as a safety net for the truly vulnerable, not an open-ended entitlement. Democrats are crazy to oppose this commonsense fix that promotes self-sufficiency and protects finite resources for those who genuinely can't work.

Democratic narrative

These work requirements are bureaucratic traps engineered by Republicans to strip health care from millions of working Americans. It's been shown that they lead to people being buried in paperwork until coverage disappears. Between five and 10 million people stand to lose Medicaid, including those with serious chronic conditions who can't meet rigid monthly reporting demands, all to bankroll tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
