The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Reopening a case settled by a president's own tape recordings is a waste of taxpayer money and an insult to the reforms that came out of that whole episode in U.S. political history. Turning the post-Watergate ethics apparatus into a weapon against the prosecutors who enforced accountability invites every future administration to relitigate history for partisan gain. Rehabilitating a documented abuser of power guts the principle that presidents answer to the law.

Pro-Trump narrative

A prosecution run by partisan loyalists who held secret meetings with the judge deserves scrutiny, no matter how many decades have passed. The record shows orders to investigate aggressively and let the evidence lead wherever it went, which is the opposite of a cover-up. Fifty years of a convenient myth, pushed by a hostile press that never accepted the man, is reason enough to finally examine how this takedown was engineered.
