This is a grave and disgraceful incident that in no way represents the values of Israel or the IDF. Israel is a country that respects different religions and their symbols. As such, the IDF should be commended for its statement and, no doubt, consequences will follow for the soldier involved in this incident.

Hate crime incidents against Christians in Israel are going up year by year. This is because the far right, ultranationalist government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has allowed these type of incidents to flourish without consequences for the perpetrators. Despite comments to the contrary from the IDF, the political climate in Israel is enabling perpetrators of these offenses to act with impunity.
