Despite what Gallup may claim, its choice to end its coverage of presidential approval ratings is a total and cowardly capitulation in the face of authoritarian intimidation. It's no mystery why they did this, given the torrent of threats and abuse from a president who cannot tolerate any data showing his historically poor performance. It's, nevertheless, a dark moment for democratic accountability.
The end of Gallup's presidential approval tracking was a strategic decision made in response to a flawed polling model, not any political pressure on President Trump's part. As response rates have collapsed, traditional surveying has become unreliable and incapable of capturing public sentiment.
