Fuel Price Hike Sparks Protests Across Syria

Is this a gut punch to war-weary families or an unavoidable fix while refineries are rebuilt?

The Spin

Government-critical narrative

Jacking up diesel 40% overnight is a gut punch to Syrians already scraping by after years of war. When fuel costs jump like that, so does the price of bread, transport and everything else, which is why tires are burning and highways are blocked. These protests warn that survival comes before spreadsheets.

Pro-government narrative

Global petroleum costs spiked, shipping and insurance got pricier and the Baniyas Refinery overhaul slashed domestic refining capacity — pretending fuel prices could stay frozen through all that is fantasy. The adjustment is temporary and under constant review, and prices are set to ease once refining capacity is restored.
