The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Spending cuts are the tough but necessary choice that France must make to avoid ballooning debt and financial ruin for the next generations. For too long, hard decisions have been kicked down the road, leaving French finances on the brink of disaster. While protecting key sectors and maintaining national security, France must swallow the pain for the sake of the greater good.

Government-critical narrative

Lecornu's status quo proposals are fooling no one. For the right, a cutback in spending plans that are still set to increase is unacceptable, while for the left, the government's commitments are viewed as nothing less than austerity extremism. Despite somehow managing to survive last year's budget chaos, the writing is on the wall if Lecornu thinks he can pull off another miracle.
