The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Foreign troops stationed inside Ethiopian territory are a clear violation of sovereignty, and no government on earth would simply shrug that off. Addis Ababa has shown considerable restraint, keeping its army inside its own borders even as armed groups receive backing from across the line. Clearing foreign forces from Ethiopian soil is the bare minimum any state owes its citizens and territorial integrity.

Government-critical narrative

Loose talk about a historic right to the Red Sea sounds a lot like a claim on Assab, and Eritrea has every reason to read it as a threat to the independence it fought decades to secure. Unproven accusations about who backs the Tigrayan rebels provide a convenient pretext for seizing a strategic port by force and redrawing borders. Neighbors coordinating closely on their own security is simply common sense.
