The Spin

Narrative A

Eriksen has now collapsed twice on a football pitch, and the second time should be the last. A defibrillator is a safeguard, not a green light to keep pushing through elite-level physical stress at 34. Retirement is the smartest move for his health, his family and everyone forced to watch in horror from the stands.

Narrative B

Eriksen has been assessed by cardiac specialists every step of the way, and those professionals keep clearing him to play. The ICD doing its job is proof that the medical safeguards are working exactly as designed. Telling a fully evaluated athlete to retire ignores the expert judgment that makes his continued career possible.
